With the International Studies major at Albion College, all students are required to go abroad for a semester, and immediately following their return to the U.S., they are required to take a class called "Building On International and Intercultural Experiences" which allows students to integrate their experiences of studying, working, and/or living abroad with a deepened analytical understanding of international and intercultural issues. I'll be taking this class in August, when I get back to school. In this class, I will be required to write a ~20 page research paper focusing on an academic topic that is inspired by my experience abroad. It must incorporate at least two different disciplinary approaches, to demonstrate that we students are capable of approaching an issue from multiple perspectives. I'm thinking of maybe attacking it through historical and business approaches, but I cannot focus my mind to think about what I'd really like to select as a topic for this paper. I feel as though there are many options for things that I can write about, but I need something that will both intrigue and challenge me.
If anyone out there has any suggestions or ideas for topics, please leave me a comment!! Any idea is a good one at this point. Help me brainstorm :-)
Are you inspired to write your 20 page paper about all the marketing research you've done while in Shanghai. I don't however know exactly what the two approaches would be tho.
ReplyDeleteHow about writing your paper on why so many foreigners buy/own business in the US rather than their homelands? Explain why, analyze why, find historical data to back up your theories, etc. More than 50% of the hotels owned in the US are by foreigners. What opportunities are in the US vs. elsewhere in the world?? Or something more indepth, lol.
ReplyDeleteInternational marketing perspective - concepts, pros, cons, differences between western marketing and eastern marketing, find stats, history, etc. Can you write 20 pages and include some of your personal creative marketing ideas?

ReplyDeleteI like the ideas, guys...
ReplyDeleteI do believe that aspects of my 'personal portfolio' can be included in this project. In fact, I'm sure that my professor would love it if I could incorporate some of my own work into the research and writing that I do.
I do like the idea of taking a more in-depth look at why foreigners come to the US to build a company. That could bring together perspectives from business, history, and culture/ethnic studies as well.
Maybe I will take a look specifically at Shanghai, and analyze the many MANY foreigners who come to this city to do business, and not only business, but business on a very global level. That way I could incorporate foreigners doing business in another country with international marketing/business perspectives and I can bring history and business together quite easily. I have met a ton of people here who do work on a global level and are foreigners, so they could provide some great interviews and firsthand information for me.
THANKS FOR THE BRAINSTORMING HELP, YOU THREE!!
